
Gossetts Announce $10 Million Gift
The Maryland family thanks Barry and Mary Gossett for their generous gift of $10 million. The couple’s investment in Great Expectations, The Campaign for Maryland will establish endowed football and basketball coaching positions as well as an endowed athletic directorship. New NSF Grant Touches UM
Maryland is one of three universities nationwide to receive a $330,000 National Science Foundation grant aimed at developing new computing technologies for the visually impaired. A three-layered device, constructed by bio-engineer and professor Leigh Abts (pictured left) and his team, allows the user to "touch" content that typically appears on a screen; it can be used not only with computers, but with digital cameras as well. Helsinki Commission to Hold Torture Field Hearing on Campus
United States Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, along with Helsinki Commission Chair, Rep. Alcee L. Hastings, will hold a field hearing on Monday, Dec. 10, in the Stamp Student Union to examine what constitutes torture or other forms of prohibited ill-treatment, what legal norms apply and what is known about the effectiveness of various interrogation methods.
