What’s Going On?

Last Chance for Seniors
By Mandie Boardman

The countdown to Commencement is on … before you hear Steny Hoyer ’63 speak at graduation, here are a few things seniors must do:

  • Celebrate your senior status.  Visit www.seniors.umd.edu to learn more about events exclusively for seniors, including Senior Week (April 29 – May 5).
  • Order your class ring.  A Balfour representative will be in the Info Booth located in the Food Court of Stamp Student Union to take ring orders May 1 – May 3.  For more info click here.
  • Contribute to the Senior Class Gift. This year’s class gift was voted on by the Senior class throughout the fall and we are excited to announce Northgate Park as the 2006-2007 Senior Class Gift! Northgate Park will welcome past, current and future Terps onto campus. The 2006-2007 Class Gift will be one that will inspire students, impress visitors, and become a symbol for us as alumni. To participate in this 95-year tradition of philanthropy click here.
  • Consider the quintessential post-graduation vacation – Essential Europe Graduation Trip hosted by the Alumni Association. The trip is May 25 – June 18.  Learn more.

Art Attack: A Maryland Tradition – May 4
By Jennifer Mino

Every year, thousands of students come together for the largest concert event at the university—Art Attack. The event boasts a day of art, culture and fun filled with moonbounces, vendors, tie-dyed t-shirts, and various entertainers, with a concert later in the day. This year, the All-American Rejects will perform at Art Attack on May 4, along with the winning band of the Battle for Art Attack, a battle of the bands for student performers.

The All-American Rejects, a rock-pop group from Oklahoma, have been performing since the late 1990s. Their most recent single, “It Ends Tonight.” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January of this year. The commercial success of their music can be heard everywhere; it has been used in Madden video games, the Super Bowl, and most recently, in the 2007 Disney movie, Meet the Robinsons.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show at Byrd Stadium. Student tickets are free. The non-student rate is $15. Pick up tickets at the Hoff Ticket Office in the Stamp Student Union.

Open House to Feature Global Village
By Michael B. Levine

On Saturday, April 28, the university will open its doors to the surrounding community for Maryland Day 2007. This will be the ninth straight year for the university’s open house, an initiative that President Mote began during his first year at Maryland.

A highlight of this year’s Maryland Day will be the Global Village located on Hornbake Plaza. “Our goal is to feature the university’s international community and partnerships that enhance the university’s position as a global leader in providing higher education to students from around the world, as well as its standing as a top public research and land-grant university.” Activities will range from honoring America’s indigenous nations to highlighting international cuisine, and from learning about Chinese culture to understanding world opinion on American values.

Near Hornbake Library, the Main Stage will host performances from the following student groups: the African Student Association Dance Troupe; Caribbean Student Association; Latino Student Union, Pacha Ma-Ma Bolivian Dance Troupe and more.

Maryland Day 2007 will begin at 10 a.m. with an international parade of flags, a presentation of the Colors by the Army and the Air Force ROTC and opening remarks by President Mote. Events continue through 4 p.m. The university anticipates a large turnout; tell your friends and family to come!

Test your furniture assembly skills for a chance to win a $100 IKEA gift card and more prizes this Maryland Day, April 28. Stop by the IKEA table on Hornbake Plaza to learn more about this global brand. Contests will be held at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The alumni association hosted numerous events for students and prospective student over the past few months. One of these fun events was the annual senior formal, Calvert Cotillion, co-hosted with Senior Council and Omicron Delta Kappa. The formal was held in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center on Saturday, February 17. Over 220 students danced the night away in Orem Alumni Hall. Check out the pictures and look for yourself and your friends. And if you don’t see yourself and you’d like to, make sure to come out to one of our upcoming events!
