East Africa’s herds of migrating animals may well be the greatest wildlife spectacle in the world. Each year, over two million animals—wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and other species—roam the Serengeti/Masai Mara ecosystem, following the fresh growth of the nutritious grasses that sustain them. Wherever they go, they in turn form the food supply for the lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas that depend on their annual appearance.

Seeing them is the dream of just about anyone who cares about nature. On our Migration Safari, we have scheduled four full days in Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve, which puts us in prime position at the right time, with the greatest chance of seeing the great herds. Of course, there are no absolute guarantees, since migratory patterns differ somewhat each year, but the chances are just outstanding.

Part of the fun is the excitement of discovery. We do not know exactly what we’re going to see in our explorations. Each day holds something different and unexpected. Perhaps we will have the good luck of seeing thousands of wildebeest cross and recross the Mara River. We may well see lions hunting. Maybe we will watch a cheetah pursue a gazelle at 70 miles an hour. Whatever we do, we will have a glimpse of our world as it existed a million years ago.
