Green CampusBig Red Named America's Greenest
More than 450 universities battled for the moniker "Top Green Campus in America," but Maryland was a shell-in. We left the competition green with envy when 2,257 of our students signed up to track their carbon footprints. The contest was sponsored by the energy-efficiency marketing group SmartPower, carbon measurement utility Climate Culture, the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Wildlife Federation and the Sierra Student Coalition. Research Funding Reaches New Heights
Maryland's research funding climbed nearly 30 percent in fiscal year 2009 to reach $518 million—a statewide record. Combined with $517 million earned by the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the collective impact tops $1 billion. Everyone sees a return on the investment, whether it's the agency that provides the funds, the citizens who supply the brainpower, or the global population, which benefits from our incredible discoveries. The Athletes in the Hall
Voice of the Terrapins Johnny Holiday, field hockey coach Missy Meharg '90 and five other stars joined the Maryland Athletics pantheon during a Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Oct. 2. Together, the inductees have lavished more than 85 years' service on the university, accounted for 11 national championships and appeared in four Olympics.
